May 2008 President’s Message
Our club has worked with the Boy Scouts for the last six years. We have provided
instructors at the Connecticut Yankee Council’s Fishing Derby and Fishing and Fly
Fishing Merit Badge school. The Fishing Derby is held yearly on the first two
weekends in April. We started out slowly with just a couple of instructors. Over the
years our participation has grown. Four years ago we started sponsoring a Venture
Crew specializing in fishing for scouts 14 to 21 years of age.
This year we took over operation of the weekend long Merit Badge class. Our
club did a great job. Eleven club members, including two junior members helped
teach 20 scouts to fish. In addition, one of the scouters and one of the scouts from
our Venture Crew spent the weekend with us acting as quartermasters for the class
providing the meals for the kids and staff. We also presented our Tie Your First Fly
program to over one hundred Scouts and Cub Scouts (and some adults) who
participated in the Fishing Derby.
We were very pleased when two of our scout students caught their first trout on
flies that they had tied themselves.
The succeeding weekend nine club members including one junior member
presented the Tie Your First Fly program to more than one hundred additional scouts
at the second Fishing Derby. The scouter who served as quartermaster on the first
weekend was so impressed by the club that he and one of the crew members
showed up and prepared lunch for our club members at his own expense.
One of the scouts from the Merit Badge class appeared the next weekend to tie
flies with the club. By the end of the day he was teaching younger scouts to tie their
first Wooly Bugger.
We have been asked by the scout council to run two weekends of classes next
year and to present our Tie Your First Fly Program on both weekends.
On behalf of our club and the Connecticut Yankee Council B.S.A. Thank You to
all of our members who took the time to bring fly fishing and tying to more than two
hundred kids and Thank you to the members who have made donations of materials
and tools (you know who you are) and to all club members for supporting our
outreach program and providing the funds to purchase the vices and materials needed
to teach fly fishing and tying to kids.
Thanks,
Fred
