FLY OF THE MONTH
Isonychia Nymph
Hook: Standard or swimming nymph, size 10 to 12. Thread: Brown.
Tail: 3 peacock swords (1/2 body length).
Rib: Mono or copper wire. Dorsal Vein: Cream hackle stem.
Abdomen: 60% Black, 40% reddish brown rabbit dubbing.
Wing case: Dark band of turkey tail slip. Legs: Brown partridge or hen.
Thorax: 60% Black, 40% reddish brown rabbit dubbing.
This year the fishing on the Farmington River was nothing less than fantastic. One of the premiere producing fly patterns was the isonychia nymph.
This “bug” is big and perhaps the best swimming aquatic nymph in the river. Their movements are strong and obvious to fish. Another striking
feature of this pattern is the cream/white Dorsal Vein which runs up the back of the abdomen and thorax. I don’t put weight on many of my nymphs
but I do this is one. I feel it produces better when fished closer to the bottom. The “Iso” hatch is one of the longest in the river. It starts in mid-
summer and lasts well into the fall.
